About

Who we are

We are supporters of Millstadt VFW Post 7980, a local Veterans of Foreign Wars post dedicated to honoring, supporting, and serving U.S. military veterans and their families in the Millstadt, Illinois area. Our mission is to preserve the legacy of those who have served while strengthening community ties through service and remembrance.

The Millstadt VFW Memorial Restoration Project was created to preserve and restore the historic M-47 Patton Tank displayed outside the post. Through volunteer efforts, fundraising events, and community support, the project seeks to ensure that this important piece of military history remains a source of pride, education, and remembrance for future generations.

The origin of the M-47 restoration project began during a morning run in late December 2025. While running past the M-47 tank on static display outside Millstadt VFW Post 7980, Joel Kurfman noticed the deteriorating condition of the vehicle and recognized the need for restoration. After presenting the idea of restoring the exterior of the tank, the VFW Post approved the project. Over the following year and a half, donations were solicited from local businesses and individuals, a community 5K run was organized, and a BBQ fundraiser was held to raise the funds necessary to restore the exterior of the tank.

Why we are Restoring the Memorial

The military tank displayed outside our post is a powerful symbol of our veterans' service and sacrifice. Over the years, it has become a centerpiece of pride, remembrance, and education for the Millstadt community.

We are repainting and restoring the tank to:

  • Honor our veterans with a respectful, well-maintained memorial
  • Preserve history by protecting the tank from further weathering and wear
  • Inspire future generations by showcasing a piece of American military heritage
  • Beautify our Post grounds, making it a more welcoming and meaningful place for community events like the community 5K.

This restoration will renew a sense of duty, patriotism, and care for those who served.
